Validity of PIO cards

Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card scheme stands withdrawn by the Government of India and has been merged with Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) card scheme. As per the existing rules, all PIO cardholders were required to obtain Overseas Citizen of India cards and PIO cards will continue to be accepted as valid travel document till March 2019.

It has now been decided to extend the validity of PIO cards for travel to India by another six months. The Bureau of Immigration will accept PIO cards as valid travel document till 30 September 2019 along with valid foreign passport and the Indian Immigration Check Post will continue to consider all PIO cards valid for entry/exit into India till 30 September 2019. This extension of timeline is subject to condition that if in the meantime any deadline is notified by the International Civil Aviation Organization there by making handwritten PIO cards invalid, then PIO cardholders may have to obtain appropriate visa from Indian Mission/Post abroad.

All PIO card holders are once again advised to get PIO card converted to OCI card to avoid any inconvenience. Information regarding the conversion process can be accessed at https://www.vfsglobal.com/india/australia/oci_pio_service/Conversion-of-PIO-to-OCI.html
